Assalamualaikum madam…. How are you today??? Hope you are in a good condition…today, I will briefly share my understanding regarding unit 5 which is Audience and Impact. This unit focuses on how we go about establishing who the audience is, and calculating the likely effect a text will have. Such texts may touch the lives of people who may not have been intended as the audience. Likewise, we should be cautious about judging the impact of texts as readers will vary considerably in the resources they bring to understanding and responding to texts. In unit 5, there are 3 reading that need to be cover on consist of reading 5.1, 5.3 and 5.4.
Reading 5.1 is discussed about ‘Australia’s methadone madness’. This reading is about types of drugs and the effects of taking drugs. There are also researches that have been done on the methadone madness by expert. Nowadays, there are lots of people especially teenagers involve in taking drugs, being a drug dealer and so on. This is maybe because they are influence with their surroundings. Thus, there should be prevention so as not to involve many more people with drugs.
Reading 5.3 is discussed on types of exposition: “persuading that” and “persuading to”. In this chapter, Martin focuses on a type of text he terms ‘exposition’. He distinguishes between two types of exposition based on differences in the purposes they achieve. The two types he identifies are ‘analytical’ and ‘hortatory’ expositions. Analytical expositions are often associated with academic speaking and writing. Hortatory expositions include texts such as political speeches, letters to the editor and office memos designed to change employee behavior. As for this reading, I can understand the explanation from Dinie’s group which discussed on exposition, thesis, analytical exposition, hortatory exposition, objective, subjective and metaphor. But I have to read more since it may slip from my mind.
Reading 5.4 is about metaphor that has been discussed and presented by Saybah’s group. This reading focuses on explaining the relationship between the writer’s choices of metaphor and how these choices may influence the readers. Metaphor plays a key role in enabling us to talk about and construct the world and allows language users the flexibility to cope with rapidly changing circumstances. When we encounter anything new, we inevitably seek to explain it in terms of things with which are already familiar. I do understand with this reading. But actually I quite confuse with this reading. But then, after they explained more, I started to understand the key terms and ideas such as metaphor, polysemy, cognitive and so on. Same with the previous reading, I need to study more and more to enhance my knowledge. Thanks guys.
As for madam, I hope you really enjoy read my comment and responses. Feel free to comment back yaa….and also thanks for your lesson in the class madam….it’s quite interesting. …=D
